Trying to pay the rent, one can at a time
Samuel Black hoped the morning after USC’s home football opener would be one of his biggest days of the year.

With the Gamecocks shutting out N.C. State 34-0, his spirits were high.

“You know there are some cans down here this morning,” he said. “Carolina win, too? You know they were partying last night.”

Black’s food comes from food stamps and his clothes from The Cooperative Ministry. His only expense is the $50-a-month rent that he pays for a one-room apartment with a stove in the corner. He pays for it by collecting and selling empty beer cans.

Black could collect cans along Two Notch Road, near where he lives. But Five Points — after football games — is where the big money is.

Paul Newman, Hollywood's anti-hero, dies at 83
Paul Newman never much cared for what he once called the "rubbish" of Hollywood, choosing to live in a quiet community on the opposite corner of the U.S. map, staying with his wife of many years and - long after he became bored with acting - pursuing his dual passions of philanthropy and race cars.

And yet despite enormous success in both endeavors and a vile distaste for celebrity, the Oscar-winning actor never lost the aura of a towering Hollywood movie star, turning in roles later in life that carried all the blue-eyed, heartthrob cool of his anti-hero performances in "Hud," "Cool Hand Luke" and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid."

The 10-time Academy Award nominee died Friday at age 83, surrounded by family and close friends at his Westport farmhouse following a long battle with cancer, publicist Jeff Sanderson said Saturday.

In May, Newman dropped plans to direct a fall production of "Of Mice and Men" at Connecticut's Westport Country Playhouse, citing unspecified health issues. The following month, a friend disclosed that he was being treated for cancer and Martha Stewart, also a friend, posted photos on her Web site of Newman looking gaunt at a charity luncheon.

But true to his fiercely private nature, Newman remained cagey about his condition, reacting to reports that he had lung cancer with a statement saying only that he was "doing nicely."

Appalachian St. beats Presbyterian 48-14
Appalachian State running back Devin Radford knew he'd eventually have his moment to shine.

He just didn't expect it to happen Saturday night.

Radford accounted for 276 yards and three touchdowns, including a 72-yard score on his only catch, to lead Appalachian State in a 48-14 victory against Presbyterian on Saturday night.

Armanti Edwards threw for 220 yards and one touchdown, while backup quarterback DeAndre Presley scored another pair on the ground for Appalachian State (2-2).

The Mountaineers, the defending Football Championship Subdivision national champions, overcame a rocky start to pile up 407 of its 697 yards of total offense in the final two quarters.

Notes: Few inches expose a big gap
CLEMSON — Cullen Harper thought he had enough.

Judging by their reactions, his Clemson teammates figured he had enough.

Instant replay, though, failed to overturn what officials ruled on the field.

Harper’s sneak failed to produce the inches the Tigers needed to continue their final drive — a play emblematic of Clemson’s troubles in the trenches this season.

“You’ve got to be able to make that to beat a good team,” coach Tommy Bowden said. “It was literally 10 inches.”

Morris: Tigers write their season eulogy
CLEMSON

TOMMY BOWDEN’S HAIR was neatly combed. He had showered and dressed before he faced the media. He was nattily attired in a jet-black suit, one fit for the funeral he had just attended.

Clemson’s season of great anticipation died at aptly named Death Valley.

Earlier, as Bowden exited the west end zone, the message from fans was loud and clear: They had seen this kind of performance before.

We could go back through the Bowden era and detail the annual game in which one phase of Clemson’s game collapsed — and with it the Tigers’ season. One season it was special teams play in a particularly galling loss. The next it was the secondary. Then the running game grew stagnant, or maybe the passing game.

Accident or assault? Trooper’s trial to begin

A white state trooper seen on a dashboard videotape hitting a black suspect fleeing on foot with his patrol car — then bragging about it afterward — goes on trial this week on a federal civil rights charge.

The case against Steve Garren is being watched closely by black lawmakers and leaders, who contend Garren’s actions were part a longstanding culture of misconduct within the Highway Patrol.

“This guy deserves to be prosecuted,” said state Rep. Leon Howard, D-Richland, chairman of the Legislative Black Caucus, when contacted last week. “In his own admission (on the dashboard videotape), he was testifying against himself.”

The charge against Garren, indicted in June, is the first federal civil rights case against a trooper since authorities launched an investigation in March into alleged misconduct within the department.

He’s music to his coach’s ears
NINETY SIX, S.C. — Ninety Six High School football coach Chris Liner has always been impressed with Parker Murray’s variety of skills.

But the senior lineman doesn’t seem to stop surprising the first-year coach.

Liner was invited to attend a devotion at Ninety Six Baptist Church recently. He already knew Murray was one of his top lineman, ranked fourth in his class academically and carrying an 1,100-plus SAT score.

Apparently, Murray’s been harboring musical talents, too.

“He’s over there, playing guitar, and I’m like, ‘When did you find time to do that?’ He’s the dang guitar guy in their praise group,” Liner said.

17 voters, four debates, an infinite number of opinions
The State newspaper put out a call to readers to watch the presidential and vice presidential debates and discuss them afterward. On Friday, 17 readers held a wide-ranging post-debate discussion about the first exchange between Republican presidential nominee John McCain and Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.

The panel will meet again Thursday when Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden and Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin debate.

The panel consists of five Republicans, six Democrats and six independents. During Friday’s debate, there were many disagreements, especially on the war in Iraq. But there was some consensus, too.

The panel agreed both candidates were careful not to fully commit to a Wall Street bailout plan. And the panel said neither candidate showed the political courage to say the economic crisis — along with growing entitlement spending and promises both made — might mean raising, instead of cutting, taxes.

Third-party candidates vie in S.C.
When George W. Bush abandoned the “humble” foreign policy he promised during his 2000 campaign, Patricia Wheat felt like the Republican Party had left her as well.

A lifelong Republican who voted for Bush, the 50-year-old Wheat, a Midlands resident, said she is supporting Constitution Party candidate Chuck Baldwin this year.

“It was like a light switch went off for me,” Wheat said of watching debate on border security and the Iraq War last year. “I don’t believe this garbage. I don’t believe what they’re saying anymore.”

Baldwin is one of six candidates on South Carolina’s presidential ballot this year. Joining Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama are Baldwin, Green Party nominee Cynthia McKinney, Libertarian Party nominee Bob Barr and independent candidate Ralph Nader.

But experts say 2008 is a particularly tough year for third-party candidates to get their message out. With no incumbent president seeking re-election, much of the focus has been on the major party candidates.

S.C. lawmakers relent on energy, economy
WASHINGTON — In a dazzlingly short span of days, South Carolina Democrats and Republicans in Congress caved on two of their core issues last week.

Bowing to relentless pressure from Republicans, Democratic congressional leaders agreed to let the 26-year-old congressional ban on offshore oil and natural gas drilling expire Tuesday, when the federal fiscal year ends.

Meanwhile, President Bush was pushing fellow Republicans in Congress to pass a massive financial-services bailout that would dwarf in cost any government program since the Depression-era New Deal.

The move to allow offshore drilling has angered environmentalists who form a key constituency for Democrats.

“The environmental community is united in its opposition to drilling,” said Anna Aurilio, who heads the Washington office of Environment America.
